The Pontiac V8 engine presents some challenges when the use of a Roots-style supercharger is desired for motivation. Thanks to the creation of this all-new billet intake manifold from Pontiac engine gurus Jeff and Mark Kauffman of Kauffman Racing Equipment, the process of outfitting an engine with a supercharger as large as the 14-71 just became much simpler for the racer.

Mark Kauffman is the brain behind the CNC machine; through the use of MasterCam modeling software, the KRE team created the beautiful billet manifold after dozens of hours of development and design time. “This is made from a solid chunk of 6061-T6 aluminum that originally weighed 150 pounds. After 15 hours on the CNC machine, final weight is approximately 17 pounds,” he explains.

There are a number of potential pitfalls that were taken into account during the manifold’s design process. For example, currently available blower intake manifolds only provide enough clearance for an 8-71 supercharger; KRE designed this new piece to have standard Pontiac distributor clearance and still allow the use of the much larger 14-71 blower case with no interference issues.

The top plate on the intake manifold is removable. Measuring 5/8-inch thick, it will allow the use of any supercharger configuration to provide flexibility to the end user. The manifold has been designed to use standard SFI-approved burst panels, and has a built-in burst panel diverter to help prevent body damage should the burst panel need to vent boost pressure.

“This intake will support 2,000+ horsepower, and provides an RPM range from 4,000 to 8,000 RPM,” says Jeff Kauffman.

Manifold runner wall thickness is 1/4-inch, and the plenum is approximately 1/2-inch thick throughout. It has been designed to work directly with KRE’s existing High Port cylinder head design, along with all other traditional-style Pontiac cylinder heads on the market. The High Port heads are 5-axis CNC ported designs that will flow in excess of 430 cfm.
